Watercolour Painters Have More FUN

Simplicity sells watercolor paintings.

In college we had a moronic phrase that we threw around: “Keep It Simple Stupid “ or KISS. This has worked pretty well as a guiding principle for me over the years. It has led me to my goal in watercolor painting: A beautifully designed piece of art that communicates well.

Clouds, trees, and field are all interesting.

Clouds, trees, and field are all interesting.

Now I say to my students- Find a subject that is interesting to you and paint everything around it to guide your eye to it. To help you think about what that might be I have created an acrostic of my own: F.U.N.

F- Fascinating

U- Unusual or Unexpected

N- New

The rule is this: If your watercolor painting demonstrates one or more of the FUN principles you will likely have a painting that you and other people enjoy. What subjects fit in these categories for you?
