I created Festival Tomatoes at the 2015 Independents Day Festival held near downtown on the West side of Columbus.
The experiment was to see if I could use the Canson XL Mixed Media paper as a plein air option. Unfortunately, I could not finish it that day. I toiled in the studio on this one. Photo reference only gets you so far.
Needless to say I am pretty pleased on how this turned out. Layering colors and pushing the background further back really saved this piece.
The Outdoor Watercolor Learning Experience
To save a piece that is well out of season and that you have no reference for you should consider doing these things to finish it:
- Make sure there is a clear focal point.
- Distinguish between foreground, middle ground, and background.
- Use distinctions in color and value to highlight the finer points of the piece.
- Do your best to make forms distinct and separate from other forms.
